Coros Vertix 2S: The Smartwatch You'll Never Want to Take Off

ElectronicBD Verdict

The fantastic Coros Vertix 2S wristwatch is highly customizable and tracks a wide range of data, including stress levels, exercise routines, and sleep patterns in addition to SpO2 readings. The watch is worth the money even though there are a few little flaws, but that's all they are.

Pros

  • Great battery life
  • Customizable watch faces
  • Compatible with a variety of third-party apps
  • Comfortable
  • Accurate sleep and fitness trackers
  • Easy-to-use app

Cons

  • Dull screen
  • Expensive
  • Maps are slow to download
  • Proprietary charging cable

Wearing a smartwatch while on the go is a terrific way to keep informed and track your fitness metrics, such as steps, sleep, and exercises. There are other options available as well; the Coros Vertix 2S rivals the Apple Watch and the Pixel Watch 2, depending on your needs and preferences. If you own an iPhone, you may select the Apple Watch, while Pixel users can choose the Google Pixel Watch 2.

Three years after the Vertix 2's launch, Coros has released its most recent product, with a few small but helpful enhancements. We discovered that the Vertix 2S is an excellent smartwatch regardless of the phone you use, thanks to its improved GPS accuracy, exceptional battery life, and variety of sensors that can detect your heart rate, stress levels, ECG, and more.

Is the price tag justified, though, considering the lackluster screen, antiquated proprietary charging cord, and a few other glitches? Does it possess the necessary qualities to be listed among the top smartwatches? See our evaluation of the Coros Vertix 2S for a detailed analysis.

OROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: PRICE & AVAILABILITY

The Coros Vertix 2S retails for $699, and it can be purchased via Coros, Amazon U.S., and Amazon U.K. Its pricing puts it in competition with devices like the Garmin Forerunner 965 ($599) and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 ($799).

The Vertix 2S replaces the Vertix 2, which was released in 2021. It comes in three new colorways: Space (black), Moon (gray), and Earth (blue).

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: DESIGN & DISPLAY

"That's a big watch," struck me as soon as I saw the Coros Vertix 2S on my wrist. It is larger than the Garmin Fenix 7, measuring 1.98 x 1.98 x 0.62 inches, almost exactly the same as the Vertix 2. Its predecessor's 280 × 280 display resolution is likewise included in this one.

Despite its small weight—3.06 oz with a silicone band or 2.46 oz with a nylon band—the Vertix 2S is pleasant to wear for extended periods of time. The watch has three tactile buttons: a back button, a digital dial, and a button for the lighting. However, because the Vertix 2S features an always-on LCD touchscreen, you can opt not to utilize these at all.

I found that the screen responded quickly to my tests. The inability to change the screen's brightness, however, is my biggest complaint. The LCD screen on the Vertix 2S is not as bright as that of the Garmin Fenix 7. Because of this, I had a difficult time seeing the dial in direct sunlight and had to cuppa the watch to see how many steps I had taken.

It's impressive how customized everything is. There are over 100 watch faces available, so there is something for everyone. Select from animated, analog, or digital styles. My favorite piece of art by Van Gogh is Starry Night, therefore I was happy to see that there was a watch face for it. The Dinner Time watch face, which has a charming dog tapping a bowl with a battery indication each time you turn the watch towards you, is my favorite—and the one I use the most.

With a 10 ATM waterproof rating, the Vertix 2S is appropriate for snorkeling and surface swimming. Wearing it in the bath or shower, or submerging it underwater, didn't cause any problems. Like the Vertix 2, the watch is likewise resistant to severe temperatures and functions well in temperatures between -22°F and 122°F.

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: HEALTH TRACKING & GPS

When you flip the Coros Vertix 2S over, a number of sensors are visible, including an ECG, an accelerometer, a barometric altimeter, a temperature sensor, a gyroscope, an electronic compass, and an optical heart rate monitor. The Vertix 2S sports an upgraded heart rate sensor, which is one of the main changes between it and the Vertix 2. Coros advises wearing the watch higher than your wrist bone to obtain precise readings and cautions against tattoos and long hair interfering with the readings.I was pleased with the heart rate sensor's accuracy, which I found to be basically comparable to an Apple Watch Series 7 while I wore it on my left wrist over a tattoo.

Your stress levels are also tracked by the Vertix 2S throughout the day. This was incredibly helpful to me since I could browse through the vibrant graph on the app to see what triggered me and when to be on the lookout going forward. You may easily perform a wellness check, which analyzes your heart rate, breathing rate, stress level, HRV, and SpO2, if you would want a more thorough examination. Very cool!

The aforementioned sensors are used by the wristwatch to track a wide range of activities. You can monitor almost any indoor or outdoor activity, including swimming in a pool, windsurfing, skiing, and jogging, hiking, and cardio at the gym.

Additionally, Coros asserts that the Vertix 2S's improved antenna design contributes to its improved GPS tracking accuracy. The GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, Beidou, and QZSS satellite systems are the five that the watch utilizes. Additionally, it has screen mirroring, so if you're following a certain route, you can view the navigation screen on your phone.

Using the smartphone app, you can observe an extremely precise route representation and a detailed study of variations in elevation, speed, heart rate, cadence, stride length, and more after an outdoor run or walk (more on that later). After utilizing an Apple Watch Series 7, I discovered that the Vertix 2S was more precise in this regard.

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: SLEEP TRACKING

I've had trouble falling asleep for years. Since I either sleep too much or too little, the Coros Vertix 2S's ability to track my sleep patterns was incredibly helpful to me. while I switched to the nylon strap, I no longer found the silicone strap to be as uncomfortable, and I hardly felt it at all while I slept or even turned over in bed.

(Image credit: Nikita Achanta / Future)

You may use the wristwatch itself or the app to set your bedtime. The watch will begin to detect whether you've fallen asleep one hour before your scheduled bedtime. After then, it will record four states of your life: waking, light, deep, and REM (the deepest period of sleep).

In addition, if you've been wearing the watch for five nights straight, you'll receive an HRV score in the morning that is compared to your baseline. This indicates the level of stress in your body, which you may use to guide your workout regimen.

Sleeping with the Vertix 2S on and examining the graph in the morning is gradually improving my quality of sleep. I'm attempting to go to bed early and wake up at the same time every morning as I become more aware of the quality of my sleep. I've considered alcohol use, stress, and worry as potential contributing reasons when there have been longer stretches of light sleep during a night. Seeing more REM and deep sleep intervals on the graph sort of motivates me to get better sleep!

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: APP

(Image credit: Nikita Achanta / Future)

Using the free Coros app on iOS or Android is quite simple. Although the Vertix 2S device offers a wealth of data, the app offers far more in-depth information on your workouts, stress levels, sleep habits, and health assessments.

Additionally, you have the option to personalize your watch by altering the activities shown, adding routes, switching up the watch face, and more. While the watch features a Find My Phone feature (which even indicates which direction to walk in), it also has the useful Find My Watch feature.

(Image credit: Nikita Achanta / Future)

I wish it wasn't so sluggish, but you can use the app to save maps to your watch so you can view them when you're not online. I tried to download maps of Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The UK map took an hour to download, compared to five minutes for the Dutch and Spanish versions. It took three attempts to eventually finish the download—one each to pause, continue, and cancel. Not a big deal, but it shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

A wide range of third-party applications, including Nike Run Club, Apple Health, and Strava, may also be connected to the watch. Additionally, you may use your watch to operate one of the top action cameras made by Insta360 or GoPro. Nevertheless, the greatest streaming services, like Apple Music and Spotify, are not supported by the Vertix 2S. Although you can save songs on the watch by connecting it to your laptop, you could feel left out if you don't have access to an online music library.

COROS VERTIX 2S REVIEW: BATTERY LIFE

Coros Vertix 2S Battery Life

The Coros Vertix 2S has an outstanding battery life, but how long the watch lasts on a full charge depends on the features you’re using. Here’s what Coros claims:

Mode Battery Duration Battery Duration (with offline music)
Standard full GPS 118 hours 32 hours
All systems on (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, QZSS) 73 hours 27 hours
Dual frequency (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, QZSS) 43 hours 22 hours
Daily use 40 days (with sleep tracking) 36 days (with daily stress tracking)

I tried the Vertix 2S for 12 days in daily use mode, seldom taking it off, and using it for stress and sleep tracking. During that time, the battery life dropped to 67%. Similar battery life is offered by the Garmin Enduro 2, but for an eye-watering $999. Furthermore, the Garmin Forerunner 965's smartwatch mode will only last you 23 days. For us, the winner in this case is the Vertix 2S.

Using a 30W adaptor, the watch took slightly under two hours to fully charge. The fact that this watch needs Coros' exclusive cable is a drawback. A USB-C cord would have been much better in my opinion because you wouldn't have to worry about misplacing the special cable. As for the Garmin Forerunner 265—it makes advantage of the now-ubiquitous USB-C cord.

SHOULD YOU BUY THE COROS VERTIX 2S?

Without a doubt, the Coros Vertix 2S deserves to be recommended. It builds upon the things that the Vertix 2 performed well. I grew to enjoy this watch more and more as I used it. Despite the fact that the maps sometimes take a while to download and the screen can be a little boring at times, considering all the other features the watch offers, these seem like little complaints.

The Vertix 2S is the perfect fitness-focused smartwatch because of its precise GPS, amazing battery life, exquisite build quality, and ability to track any metric you desire, such your stress levels or breathing patterns.

Naturally, it may be a more sensible choice if your gadget is a part of another brand's ecosystem, such as one of the finest Garmin watches, but your battery life would suffer. I don't want to take the Vertix 2S off my wrist; if you're more platform-agnostic, it's a terrific option.
